HH The Dalai Lama

When the Dalai Lama visited the University of British Columbia, he had a meeting with the dean and a group of professors including an aged man who had come in just for this meeting with His Holiness. He was sitting down. When His Holiness entered the room, he tried to get up, although His Holiness was not very near. The fellow, a thin, very old man, was trying to get up to show his respect. All of us saw the great difficulty that he had getting up—such that he might fall down—and we felt in our hearts for him. However, the only one who moved quickly to help him was the Dalai Lama, who took hold of him and helped him up. His Holiness wasn’t so full of himself as to think, “I’m here to receive these people.”-Jeffrey Hopkins, author and former translator for HH the Dalai Lama

Nelson Mandela

For to be free is not merely to cast off one's chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.

Hanging prayerflags in the rain at Guru Rinpoche's cave in Pharping.

Pharping is in the hills overlooking the Kathmandu Valley. It is the home of various meditation caves where the great meditation master Padmasambhava meditated on his way to Tibet

Tara Translation Project

Please help support The Tara Translation Project of Chris Wilkinson.

Here is what I wrote to Chris recently about his work:
"As far as your work goes, I meant it when I said I think you are a great translator. I don't speak or read Tibetan, but I do translations from Italian to English and so I know it is a big work. The thing I like about your work is your knack for putting it into really fluent English. Really rare in my opinion and I have heard and read a lot of stuff in the last 35 years or so. This is not meant as a criticism of any other translator. It is simply my opinion about your work."

Nelson Mandela on resentment...

Resentment is like drinking poison and then hoping it will

kill your enemies.

Nepal video

This was the video that we used to raise funds for a water filtration system for little monks in Nepal who were constantly getting sick from the polluted water. The production of the video was generously produced free of charge by Daniele Gatti and Mario Terenzio. The engineering services were generously done free of charge by Greg Whiteside. Many people contributed funds to make this happen. One year after the water system had been in place I received an email from the manager of the monastery saying that in that year since the system had been functioning, not one little monk had been sick. On behalf of the little monks of Nepal, a great big thank you to everyone involved. Thanks to all the people who contributed money. You know who you are! (Turn on your sound before watching it.)

It Doesn’t Have To Hurt So Much

Life hurts. The young, the old, everyone suffers. Sometimes we find relief, but sometimes we don’t.  When that happens is there any hope? One man’s quest to answer this question led him to study and practice with the great meditation masters of the east. After 30 years he has now written a concise and practical guide using meditation and mindfulness for managing pain and suffering.  The good news is that “It Doesn’t Have To Hurt So Much.”
